Previously on “Next Level Chef”
Last time on “Next Level Chef,” contestants faced the challenge of creating a stunning dessert that was as appealing to the palate as it was to the eye. The top two performers were Omi and Chris, with Omi taking the win and earning the Time Token advantage. In the elimination cook-off, Nuri and Mehreen triumphed over Michelle Calcgni, leading to her departure from the competition.
The Challenge Begins
As the top six chefs enter the kitchen, they learn that tonight’s task revolves around the beloved classic dish, surf and turf. The judges are eager for combinations that not only impress with flavor but also with their visual appeal. Omi, holding the final time token, decides to deduct 10 seconds from Chris’s cooking time. Omi and Chris will work on the upper level, while Tucker, Pilar, and Gordon will be in the middle kitchen, and Nuri and Mehreen will operate from the basement with Nyesha.
Ingredient Selection
Omi is ecstatic to discover scallops and ribeye for her dish, while Chris scrambles to collect prawns, managing to recover them alongside a rack of lamb. On the middle level, Tucker selects a NY strip and squid, while Pilar, who is a bit anxious about cooking octopus for the first time, confidently states, “I didn’t come here to play it safe.” Downstairs, Mehreen is pleased to find a veal chop and tuna, while Nuri takes his time to decide, eventually opting for venison and oysters.
Coaching and Concerns
Nyesha encourages Mehreen, highlighting that her classic pairing should bring her confidence. However, Mehreen opts to chart her own course, feeling intimidated by Nyesha’s advice. Nuri, who has never prepared venison, is unsure how to integrate it with oysters and struggles with nerves. Nyesha advises him to avoid overthinking his dish.
Kitchen Dynamics
As the competition unfolds, Nyesha expresses concern for the chefs working in the basement, particularly Nuri, whom she feels is “cooking scared,” and Mehreen, who lacks experience with veal. Meanwhile, Tucker appears self-assured, although Pilar is struggling with her octopus preparation. In the upper kitchen, Omi is crafting a New England clam chowder enhanced with scallops, while Chris feels reasonably confident about his prawns and lamb combination.
Mid-Round Turmoil
As the challenge progresses, a variety of carrots is introduced to enhance the chefs’ presentations. Pilar’s rib cap is cooking slower than anticipated, prompting Gordon to offer her guidance on searing it. With just 15 minutes remaining, Richard questions whether Chris’s dish may be overly complex with several sauces, while Tucker feels the heat as the last chef standing for Gordon, and Pilar’s rib cap remains undercooked.
Plating Time
Pilar is anxious as her rib cap rests, fearing it won’t be properly cooked. Nyesha urges Mehreen not to complicate her dish further and informs Nuri that he needs to focus his movements. With only 90 seconds left, the chefs scramble to plate their creations, successfully avoiding major mishaps.
Judging the Dishes
The judges begin their tasting with the basement dishes, finding Nuri’s venison and oysters to be a peculiar pairing, though the venison is tender. Mehreen’s veal chop with tuna raises eyebrows for its presentation, which resembles a “salad of tuna,” and while the tuna impresses, the veal lacks moisture.
Middle Floor Insights
From the middle kitchen, Tucker’s NY strip paired with squid receives accolades for its modern presentation, with Richard noting its cohesiveness. Conversely, Pilar’s rib cap with octopus, although visually appealing, suffers from undercooking, and the texture of the octopus is compared to “chewing gum.”
Top Floor Creations
On the top level, Chris’s roasted lamb with crispy prawn garners praise for its unique flavor profile, while Omi’s ribeye with scallop chowder disappoints, as the chowder overpowers the ribeye. Nyesha comments that while each component is good, they fail to harmonize.
Elimination Decisions
After deliberation, the judges decide that Tucker’s dish stands out from the rest. Consequently, Mehreen, Pilar, and Omi find themselves facing elimination. Chris and Nuri will advance to compete in the middle kitchen next week.
Elimination Challenge
In the elimination round, Mehreen, Pilar, and Omi are tasked with preparing their best rendition of a bird dish, with Nyesha offering guidance while Gordon and Richard judge. The chefs rush to select their proteins: Omi chooses chicken, Pilar opts for squab, and Mehreen picks cornish game hen. With limited time remaining, Mehreen struggles with her game hen skewers, ultimately switching to make naan, which doesn’t turn out as planned.
Final Judgments
As the time expires, all three chefs manage to present their dishes. Pilar’s squab is visually appealing and cooked well, though the addition of tomatoes is seen as a misstep. Omi’s chicken breast sofrito is complemented by a flavorful sauce, yet the rice is deemed a major flaw. Mehreen’s dish is praised for its authentic presentation, but it is noted that the delicate game hen needs more seasoning, although her naan impresses the judges. Ultimately, the judges decide to eliminate Mehreen, who reflects on her journey with pride, stating, “I’m really proud of myself.”
